Codependency is caused by dysfunctional relationship that impairs a person emotionally and psychologically, resulting in a variety of painful and unhealthy consequences. Codependents believe they are responsible to make others feel happy and successful. They find difficulty saying no to any need, or they feel very guilty if they do. Often, they respond to help others out of their own love deficits; developing compulsive pattern of dependency behaviours centered on the approval of others in the attempt to find safety, self-worth and identity. Codependents seem like self-sacrificing model Christians. On the surface, codependency messages sound like Christian teachings of servanthood. - "They put the needs of others first." - " They give much of themselves." - "They are always willing to sacrifice." However, the motivation for their actions stems from low self esteem and the need to prove themselves acceptable, repressing guilt and fear, serving from legalism rather than grace.
